What Is Ovulation?

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary into the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm. This typically occurs once per cycle, approximately 14 days before the next menstrual period. The egg survives for only 12 to 24 hours, while sperm can survive up to five days in fertile cervical mucus — creating a fertile window of about six days each cycle.

The Four Phases of Your Cycle

  • Menstrual (Days 1–5): Uterine lining sheds. Estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest.
  • Follicular (Days 1–13): FSH stimulates follicles to mature. Rising estrogen thickens the uterine lining.
  • Ovulation (~Day 14): An LH surge triggers egg release. This is peak fertility.
  • Luteal (Days 15–28): The corpus luteum produces progesterone to prepare for potential implantation.

How the Ovulation Calculator Works

Our calculator uses the Ogino-Knaus method to estimate your fertile window. It subtracts your luteal phase length (typically 14 days) from your cycle length to pinpoint ovulation, then identifies the five days before ovulation plus ovulation day itself as your fertile window. We support three calculation methods for maximum accuracy:

  • Last Menstrual Period (LMP): Enter your last period date and average cycle length. Best for regular 21–35 day cycles.
  • Custom Luteal Phase: If your luteal phase differs from 14 days, customize this value for more precise ovulation estimates.
  • Irregular Cycle (Ogino-Knaus): Provide your shortest and longest cycle lengths from the past 6–12 months for a wider, more conservative fertile window.

Our free ovulation calculator also calculates your implantation window (6–10 days post-ovulation) and recommended pregnancy test dates.
