Finding the Fertile Window: Maximizing Conception Odds

Many believe that pregnancy can occur on any day of the menstrual cycle, but biologically, conception is restricted to a narrow timeline known as the fertile window.

The 6-Day Fertile Window

The fertile window is determined by the biological lifespan of human gametes:

• Sperm Lifespan: Up to 5 days. Healthy sperm can survive in the warm, nutrient-rich environment of the cervix and fallopian tubes if fertile cervical mucus is present.
• Egg Lifespan: 12 to 24 hours. Once released during ovulation, the egg must be fertilized within this time frame, or it dissolves and is shed during the next period.

Because of this, the fertile window spans a total of six days: the five days leading up to ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Intercourse outside of this window has a statistical conception probability of near zero.

Probability of Conception by Day

Conception odds vary significantly depending on when intercourse occurs relative to ovulation:

• 5 Days Before Ovulation: ~10% chance
• 4 Days Before Ovulation: ~15% chance
• 3 Days Before Ovulation: ~20% chance
• 2 Days Before Ovulation: ~26% chance
• 1 Day Before Ovulation: ~30% chance
• Ovulation Day: ~33% chance (Peak)
• 1 Day After Ovulation: ~5% (rapid decline as the egg loses viability)

Timing intercourse during the two days preceding ovulation offers the highest likelihood of successful fertilization.
