Basal Body Temperature (BBT) Charting: Confirming Ovulation

Basal Body Temperature (BBT) charting is an evidence-based fertility awareness method. While calendar calculations estimate when ovulation should occur, BBT charting provides physical proof that ovulation has occurred.

What is Basal Body Temperature?

Your Basal Body Temperature is your body’s temperature at complete rest. During the first half of your cycle (follicular phase), estrogen dominates, keeping your BBT lower, typically between 97.0°F and 97.7°F (36.1°C to 36.5°C).

Once ovulation occurs, the ruptured follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone. Progesterone acts on your hypothalamus to raise your basal metabolic rate, causing your BBT to rise by 0.5°F to 1.0°F (0.3°C to 0.6°C). This rise remains sustained until your next period.

The BBT Charting Protocol

To ensure accurate readings, you must follow a strict measurement protocol:

  1. Use a Basal Thermometer: Standard digital thermometers are not sensitive enough. Use a dedicated basal thermometer that displays temperature to two decimal places (e.g., 97.65°F).
  2. Measure First Thing in the Morning: Take your temperature immediately upon waking, before you sit up, talk, drink water, or get out of bed. Keep the thermometer on your nightstand.
  3. Consistent Timing: Take your temperature at the same time every morning (within a 30-minute window). Fluctuations in sleep cycles can alter results.
  4. Log Daily: Record your temperature in a chart. You are looking for the “thermal shift”—three consecutive days of temperatures higher than the previous six days, confirming ovulation has taken place.
